SOCK FIP, which is dedicated to supporting FIP research at UC Davis, has some news to share.
We now have a SOCK FIP informational brochure -- we could use help getting these and some accompanying letters out to breeders, veterinarians, rescue groups, shelters, and other cat lovers. Our hope is to to help educate them about FIP and to spread the word about supporting FIP research at UC Davis. I'd be happy to send electronic copies to anyone who might be interested. Please contact me directly.
In particular, we want to spread the word that we have A CRITICAL NEED FOR SAMPLES for two UC Davis genetic studies:
Coronavirus Genetic Study: samples from all FIP affected cats are needed to identify and study the different strains and mutations that occur in the coronavirus, which can result in FIP. For this study we welcome samples from all cats, from domestic short and longhairs (random bred) to pedigreed cats.
FIP Susceptibility Study: samples from related cats are needed for this to study genetic FIP susceptibility, especially from the Birman, Burmese, Bengal, Maine Coon, Persian, Ragdoll, and Scottish Fold breeds. All other breeds are welcome as well if there is a problem with FIP in that breed's lines (or no history of FIP!) This study needs samples from three groups: 1) FIP affected cats, 2) cats related to those affected by FIP, and 3) cats with no history of FIP for at least three generations. It is especially helpful if a multigeneration pedigree can be included indicating which cats are FIP affected and which not.
Information on participating in the studies can be found at this page on our website:

And this past week SOCK FIP has filed for non-profit status! This will make it easier for the funds we raise to go directly to Dr. Pedersen's FIP research at the UC Davis Center for Companion Animal Health. All the donations we raise through SOCK FIP will support Dr. P's FIP research. SOCK FIP can also now receive donations through PayPal. We've got a button right on the website to make it very easy to give if you know of anyone interested.
Thanks everyone for supporting FIP research! And please feel free to share this information with anyone who might be able to help.
